Life Saver: A Favor Returned

Today’s blog post is about a heroic pup named Sky. Sky belonged to Franz Van Derpoll of Australia. Franz is forever grateful for the life of Sky.

While spearfishing one evening, Franz unfortunately became surrounded by two circling sharks. He realized he was in trouble, but so did faithful Sky. Sky jumped in the water to her owner’s rescue! After emerging from the water, Franz realized after seeing bloody water and no sign of Sky, she had passed on. A pet owner can only hope for such a giving and loving animal.

Although Sky saved Franz’s life, his second chance at life has been a bittersweet experience. Years ago, he and Sky met at the harbor where Franz worked. She seemed to have had a hard life up until that point because she was malnourished and had been abused. Soon after, both Franz and Sky became the best of buddies.

Before the Sky’s arrival, Franz suffered the loss of his wife, Mary. He truly feels as though Sky took Mary’s place. She was able to put a smile back on Franz’s face during such a tough time. So not only did Franz save Sky, Sky saved Franz; and now for a second time.

Loyal Until the End… and Beyond!

HachikoPeople often use the word “loyal” to describe their pets, dogs especially. “Man’s best friend” has been a trusted and faithful companion for centuries to many people, but none quite so much as Hachiko, who became famous for his loyalty to his owner.

On a farm in Japan in the early 1920s, a litter of Akita dogs was born. Among the pups was Hachiko, who was taken by a professor at the University of Tokyo as a pet. For a year, the pair had a daily routine: the professor would go to the train station, Hachiko in tow, and leave for a day of work. When the train would return in the afternoons, Hachiko would be there waiting. One day, however, the professor did not return. At the age of 54, the professor had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and passed away.

Even so, Hachiko did not change his daily routine. For nearly ten years after his owner died, he could be seen waiting at the train station at the exact time every day that the train was due to arrive. He waited until his death, but he was not alone for all that time. One of the professor’s students followed Hachiko home one day, and learned of his story. The student published a paper about Hachiko, and soon people began to bring him treats while he waited patiently for his master to return. The loyal Akita died of terminal cancer on the streets of Japan in 1935.

Hachiko’s story did not die along with him, however. He became a national symbol of loyalty in Japan and has been the inspiration behind many books and movies, and is referenced often in pop culture throughout the world. He even has a bronze statue build in his likeness at the very train station where he waited all those years ago, so he can continue his constant vigil.

Frank and Louie seeing double!

frank and Louie two headed cat

Frank and Louie

We all know that cats can be a little two-faced sometimes with their personalities, but have you actually seen it on their face? Frank and Louie was born with two faces, and he was not expected to live long. Frank and Louie were born as a Janus cat. Janus cats are cats that are born with two heads, and typically suffer from internal organ abnormalities and have a short life span. Janus cats suffer from many ailments such as cleft palates which can cause them to starve. They are also known to get milk in their lungs due to their birth defects, which can cause pneumonia.

Frank and Louie, however, beat those terrible odds by living a full, healthy 15 years! He will appear in the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records as the longest surviving Janus cats. You’re probably wondering if Frank and Louie is one or actually two cats! Frank was the one with the esophagus that provided nutrition. Frank and Louie was just like any other cat – purring, rubbing against people – typically cat behaviors! Frank and Louie had two mouths, two noses, and three eyes. The third eye couldn’t blink, so when he took a nap it would appear that he was still awake!

Frank and Louie were quite laid back, and acted more like dogs than cats! He enjoyed being walked on a leash, and going out for adventurous car rides! He was very friendly, and did not seem to be hindered by his condition.

Frank and Louie was born on September 1999 and passed away on December 4th, 2014. He brought joy and warmth into everyone he met and has inspired many that anything can be possible, no matter how difficult the situation is!

LuLu the amazing pig

LuLu the life saving pig

Having a heart attack can be one of the most crucial, terrifying moments in anyone’s lives. Luckily, animals have keen senses and can pick up when something is going wrong and come to the rescue.

Jo Ann and her husband agreed to baby sit their daughters pig named LuLu. Little did they know that this (not so) little pig could save Jo Ann’s life. On August 4th 1998, Jo Ann’s husband was out fishing when she had her 2nd heart attack. Desperate for help, she tried to get anyone’s attention by throwing an alarm clock through the window of their vacation trailer. Their dog inside started barking, but that wasn’t enough.

LuLu sensed something was wrong, and began to cry out in distress. She pushed herself through the doggie door, went through the gate and proceeded to lie down in the middle of the road where traffic flows. One man, curious as to why LuLu was acting in such strange behavior, stopped and followed LuLu to the trailer. Once at the trailer, the man was able to find Jo Ann on the ground, calling for his help.

She was then flown out to a hospital for open heart surgery. The doctors said if had more than 15 minutes passed, she would have died. LuLu had saved Jo Ann’s life! Shortly after LuLu’s historic act, she became a big hit on newspapers and internet and became quickly known world wide!

LuLu has a long, healthy life ahead of her favorite treats, jelly donuts!

Gotta have Faith!

This months incredible pet is named “Faith“.

faith two legged dog

If you don’t know her story then please let me be the first one to share it with you =)

You may have seen faith in the news already but if you have not, here is the scoop. Faith is an incredible canine that will be missed! She has inspired MILLION of people to overcome adversity.  Faith was born with normal back legs but only one front leg that was deformed (that had to be removed). Her loving owners wisely refused to listen to the advice of some of the vets and other people that wanted to euthanize her. They instead taught her how to walk (much like a human). They were able to pull this off by using a “peanut butter trick”. At first, faith would hop like a rabbit. Eventually she started walking on her own. The peanut butter was not the only helper though! The owners had another little dog that helped Faith take her first steps too! The little dog stole her toy and ran off with it. Faith did not like that so much and ran to get it back! After that, she started chasing other animals as well… birds, cats.. whatever moves!

Faith is a television star! (and almost a movie store too!)

Faith had a busy life, she has made appearances for disabled veterans and even been on the Oprah show! She has also been on the Montel Williams show, Ripley’s believe it or not and Animal attractions television. She came close to appearing in the blockbuster movie series Harry Potter.

Faith passed away September 23rd in 2014.

She will be missed and it was such a blessing to have such a wonderful creature in our world. She has inspired people to live their lives to the fullest despite the things that go wrong that are out of their control.

The next time you are having a down day please try to remember to have Faith =)
